Los MTV Movie & TV Awards se enfrentaron este año a una serie de obstáculos debido a la huelga del Sindicato de Guionistas de Estados Unidos. Aunque estaba previsto que la gala se retransmitiera en directo el domingo, se anunció que, debido a la huelga, la cadena emitiría un especial pregrabado, ya que varios asistentes anunciaron que se retiraban de la gala.
«Mientras estudiamos cuidadosamente la mejor manera de ofrecer la primera gala de premios que imaginamos y en la que tanto ha trabajado nuestro equipo, nos alejamos de un evento en directo que nos permita producir una noche memorable llena de adelantos exclusivos, categorías irreverentes que nuestra audiencia espera, y un sinfín de momentos que sorprenderán y deleitarán al rendir homenaje a lo mejor del cine y la televisión del año pasado», declaró Bruce Gillmer, presidente de música, talento musical, programación y eventos de Paramount Global y productor ejecutivo de los MTV Movie & TV Awards.
