Pese a una recesión y huelgas policiales que elevaron las preocupaciones de seguridad durante las últimas semanas en Brasil, miles de locales y turistas se desplazaban por Río para el comienzo del festival de cinco días, que la ciudad espera atraiga a más de 1 millón de visitantes y genere unos 1.000 millones de dólares para la economía doméstica.

Una limitada huelga policial en Río este mes generó temores de un aumento de los delitos durante carnaval. Pero para esta semana la actividad policial había vuelto a ser normal y las fiestas callejeras previas se celebraron sin incidentes mayores.

Con la cerveza y los cócteles fluyendo libremente, las autoridades colocaron orinales al aire libre por toda la ciudad y algunas oficinas y tiendas, por temor a vándalos, tapiaron puertas y ventanas.

El festival, cuyas raíces se encuentran en una tradición de complacencia carnal antes de la temporada de Cuaresma católica, termina oficialmente el próximo miércoles.

Los grandes desfiles de carnaval y otras festividades también se llevarán a cabo en otras ciudades, incluyendo São Paulo, la mayor metrópolis de Brasil, y Salvador, una ciudad en el noreste donde las procesiones de carros gigantes sirven como escenario para estrellas del pop y otros artistas.
